Westwood to play St. Jude Classic after all

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The St. Jude Classic has had a change of heart.

Lee Westwood, the No. 4-ranked player in the world, has been granted a sponsor exemption to the tournament in Memphis, Tenn., after all. Westwood was informed during Wednesday’s pro-am at the Quail Hollow Championship.

“I had a good night’s sleep and thought about it and said, ‘How in the world could we deny the No. 4 player in the world?’ ’’ said Phil Cannon, tournament director at St. Jude, which is played the week before the U.S. Open. “We talked to the players and people involved and wanted to make our tournament better.’’

Just 24 hours earlier, Westwood had talked with the media about having been denied a sponsor exemption to St. Jude, in no small part because of his endorsement deal with United Parcel Service. The shipping giant is a primary competitor with FedEx, which sponsors the PGA Tour’s playoffs and is headquartered at TPC Southwind, site of the June 10-13 St. Jude Classic.

“Now everyone is happy,’’ Cannon said.
