Rookie Scott Brown fired a course record-tying 9-under 62 Thursday to take a two-stroke lead over Stephen Poole at the Nationwide Tour’s Rex Hospital Open.
Brown, who has just one career top-10 finish on tour, made seven birdies and an eagle at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, N.C. Troy Kelly and Chris Kirk, No. 4 on this year’s money list, shot 65 and are three shots back. John Riegger, John Douma, Andrew Buckle, Scott Dunlap and Ben Bates each shot 66.
Brown, who turned pro in 2006 after playing at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, finished eighth last month at the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA, his only top-10 finish in 15 career Nationwide starts. He has made five cuts in nine starts this year.
At TPC Wakefield Plantation, he went out in 4-under 31, before eagling the par-5 13th and birdieing Nos. 15-17.
Sixteen-year-old Grayson Murray, who became the fifth-youngest player to compete in a Nationwide Tour event, shot 73 and is tied for 121st.
