BRYAN, Texas – Seven is heaven, but eight would be great. That’s what Wichita State senior Dustin Garza is hoping to add to his plate over the next two days at the NCAA South Central Regional at Texas A&M’s Tradition’s Club in College Station, Texas.
Garza’s final season as a Shocker has produced seven victories, including an impressive win at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
Now the MVC Player of the Year is looking to make it No. 8.
After an opening 6-under 66 Thursday, he’s on a fast track to accomplishing it. Garza shared the first-round lead with Texas A&M’s Nacho Elvira, TCU’s Daniel Jennevert and North Florida’s Kevin Phelan.
Starting on the 10th hole, Garza turned in 2-under 34 after making three birdies and a bogey. He then added birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 15 and 17 to come in in 32.
Garza is the real deal. If Wichita State doesn’t finish among the top 5 on Saturday and qualify as a team for the NCAA finals, I certainly hope Garza lands the lone individual spot. He’s good enough to make a run at the NCAA title. He deserves to be at The Honors Course just outside Chattanooga, Tenn., the first week in June.
