There are a couple of proposals floating around collegiate athletics regarding college recruiting that will be voted on next January at the NCAA Convention. Some of the details can get a little confusing.
The proposal that is getting the most attention involves early commitments and an attempt to stop PSAs (potential student-athletes) from giving verbal commitments early on in their high school career. Good luck with that! I can’t even begin to imagine the nightmare of policing this policy or the handshake deals in dark alleys.
Another proposal deals with contacts and allowing unlimited contacts. I can hear the smaller-budget schools now at the coaches’ convention next winter. If the goal is to limit verbal commitments, then why would you want to allow unlimited contacts?
When it comes to unlimited phone calls, a proposal that did pass and goes into effect Aug. 1 will allow coaches to make unlimited phone contact during an athlete’s contact period. The key phrase here is “during an athlete’s contact period.”
Golf is not included in this guideline change because there is no recruiting calendar in golf which uses a contact period.
Hopefully this will help clear up a few things for all involved.
