Heart-transplant Compton leading Greenbrier

Heart-transplant Compton leading Greenbrier

I don’t have many sports heroes these days. I’ve learned one must pick athletic idols at his own peril. The likes of Christ, Buddha, Ghandi, Mandela and Mother Teresa strike me as better role models than well-paid professional athletes.

But one of the ones I do have made news today. Good news.

Erik Compton, a double heart-transplant recipient, took the early lead in the Greenbrier Classic with a 63.

Playing on a sponsor exemption, Compton is making his seventh start on the PGA Tour this year and 24th in his career. His best finish was a tie for 30th this year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Every time I see Compton he has a big smile on his face. I love his attitude and perseverance. You might say he has heart.
