FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Justin Thomas shot a course-record, 7-under 65 Monday to take the lead among early starters in the opening round of the Junior PGA Championship.

Thomas, runner-up at the recent U.S. Junior Amateur, had a one-shot lead over Oliver Schniederjans with the afternoon wave just getting under way at rain-softened Sycamore Hills Golf Club. Thomas made seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys on a windless morning.

“I’m happy with the way I hit it and I’m rolling it well,” said Thomas, 17. “It’s funny what happens when you finally make some putts.”

Mariah Stackhouse and Kyle Roig each shot 70 to share the lead in the girls’ division. Casie Cathrea shot 71, as only three players broke par in the morning wave.
