Na rebounds from wrong-ball scare with birdies

ATLANTA – There was no reason to look at the ball when he got to the drop zone, but Kevin Na is glad he did. Had he not, the first round of the Tour Championship might have been a very costly day.

Having hit his tee ball into water at the 212-yard, par-3 sixth at East Lake Golf Club, Na was en route to his second straight bogey and hardly in a good mood. Fortunately, he remained in focus, however, because he caught a mistake that would have spoiled his round and perhaps his playoff status.

Na said he uses a previous generation of the Titleist ProV1. But for some reason, one current ProV1 ball was in his bag and Na came perilously close to putting that in play.

Had he done so, the penalty would have ranged from two strokes to four strokes to possible disqualification, but fortunately Na was spared such heartache. Not only that, but he birdied Nos. 7, 8, and 9, shot 69, and finished the day tied for sixth.
