Matthew NeSmith, No. 29 in Golfweek’s rankings for the class of 2012, has made a verbal commitment to play golf for South Carolina in the fall of 2012. NeSmith, who lives in North Augusta, Ga. – which is right on the border between Georgia and South Carolina – also made unofficial visits to Clemson and Georgia.
Logistics played a role in NeSmith’s decision to attend South Carolina, but he also fell in love with the whole Gamecock program.
“I had thought about maybe going other places and then I just made such a good relationship with (head coach) Bill McDonald from just years of talking to him,” NeSmith explained. “I was dreading the day that I ever would have to call him and tell him I was going somewhere else. He’s a huge reason I went there.”
NeSmith, who is leaning toward a career in golf or sports marketing, also is excited about attending South Carolina’s school of business.
NeSmith qualified for the Junior World Championship this summer, finishing T-37. He also won the George Holliday and the Orange Jacket, two tournaments in South Carolina, this year.
“It’s been a fun ride lately,” NeSmith said of his game.
