The Illinois women’s golf team won their first title of the season Tuesday, claiming a six-shot win at the Memphis Women’s Invitational after the third round of the tournament was rained out.
Illinois was in fourth after the first round at Ridgeway Country Club in Germantown, Tenn., but moved into the top spot after a 13-over 301, the lowest round of the tournament. Memphis and Missouri State tied for second at 53-over 621.
Southern Mississippi’s Vicky Correa won the individual title after beating Mississippi State’s Erika Thornton in a playoff. Both finished the tournament at 5-over 147. Cincinnati’s Alex Carl and Boise State’s Hayley Young tied for third at 8-over 150.
South Alabama won the men’s side of the tournament after putting up a 14-over 878 at Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn. The team capped the tournament with an even-par 288, its lowest round of the week by five shots.
Akron was second at 21-over 885 while Missouri was third another seven shots back. Host Memphis finished fourth at 30-over 894.
South Alabama also claimed the individual champion in Jack Hiluta, who finished at 7-under 209. Missouri’s Jace Long, who was second, was the only other player in the field to finish under par at 2-under 214.
