White golf grips became a phenomenon in 2010. Golf Pride, Winn and Lamkin introduced white grips that invaded the golf landscape like, well, a snowstorm.
“I don’t think anybody expected this kind of reaction,” said Dan Koehler, director of global sales and marketing for Golf Pride. “Golfers are going crazy over these white grips.”
Golf Pride’s new all-white grip for 2010 was an addition to the popular Tour Wrap family called the Tour Wrap 2G and joined the white MultiCompound cord grip in the Golf Pride lineup.
The white MultiCompound (with a splash of black near the top) gained exposure when Phil Mickelson put the grip on his clubs. So far this year, white/black has outsold every other MultiCompound color combination except red/black.
Winn’s white entry for 2010 was the WinnLite Firm.
“It has done very, very well for us,” Winn marketing manager Jeff Shepherd said. “Of course, it’s nice to keep it clean.”
How should white grips be cleaned? By wiping with a soft, wet towel and a little soap. Or by using a soft abrasive brush. Grips should never be immersed in water.
Winn grips have a felt layer underneath the outer layer of polymer, and the felt could be damaged by water. Other grips have a layer of double-sided tape that could lose its sticking power.
“The good thing about white grips,” said Kim Doren, director of marketing/communications for Lamkin, which introduced the distinctive Performance Plus 3GEN, “is that you can see when they get dirty, so you are reminded to clean them. Too many golfers never clean their grips.”
