SYDNEY, Australia – Liang Wen-chong’s quest for the OneAsia Order of Merit crown brings him to Australia for a two-week stay.

Liang, the highest-ranked Chinese player in the world at No. 65, is among the top players at the Australian Open (Dec. 2-5) and the Australian PGA Championship (Dec. 9-12), both co-sanctioned by OneAsia and the PGA Tour of Australasia.

Through the two-year history of OneAsia, Liang has more victories (three) of any player on tour. He won last year’s China Classic, and has triumphed this season at the Luxehills Chengdu Open and the Thailand Open.

A strong showing this week at the Australian Open at The Lakes can eat into Y.E. Yang’s US$158,890 lead in the money standings. Yang, a U.S. PGA Tour member, won’t compete in either event.

“I am looking forward to playing my best at these tournaments (in Australia),” said Liang, who won the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2007. “It is coming to the end of the season so I’ve been feeling a bit tired. But I hope I will be able to cope with the mental challenge.”

Liang has had a globe-trotting season, playing in Europe, the United States, as well as all over Asia. He’s earned a total of seven top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour, Japan Tour and OneAsia.

Arguably, his most impressive performance came in August at the U.S. PGA Championship, where he finished eighth after shooting a course-record 64 in the third round.

But the 32-year-old has some stiff competition Down Under with Australians Adam Scott and Stuart Appleby in fine form after recent victories at the Singapore Open and Australian Masters, respectively.
