David Higdon, the LPGA’s chief communications officer, is leaving the women’s tour for a position with NASCAR.
He has been named managing director of NASCAR’s newly formed Integrated Marketing Communications department and will start work June 20.
“It’s bittersweet,” said Higdon, speaking from the State Farm Classic in Springfield, Ill. “It’s a good opportunity for my family and myself.”
In the interim, Heather Daly-Donofrio and Mike Scanlan will oversee the LPGA’s communications.
Higdon was hired by the LPGA in February 2009 by former commissioner Carolyn Bivens. He oversaw corporate communications; stakeholder and media relations; player promotion; TV and digital media content; and served on the World Golf Hall of Fame Advisory Board.
Higdon has experience in the racing arena. From 2007 to ‘08, he was executive vice president of strategic development and communications at Champ Car (formerly CART).
In his new role at NASCAR, Higdon will help develop communication strategies, with an emphasis on competition, and also will be responsible for crisis communications and public-affairs initiatives.
