Alison Lee, of Valencia, Calif., has verbally committed to UCLA for the fall of 2013. She is ranked No. 5 by Golfweek in the class of 2013.
Lee, 16, didn’t make any other unofficial visits, but knew she wanted to stay near home in California, which narrowed her choice of schools to UCLA and USC. Lee said that UCLA stood out because of head coach Carrie Forsyth, recently named Golfweek’s Coach of the Year, and her future teammates.
“I played in tournaments with them when they were still juniors, so I feel I will be really comfortable when I get there,” Lee said. “And they also practice at nice facilities. They’re all really close to the campus, so it won’t be a hassle to get to the golf course.”
Lee also is excited at the prospect of joining a program that won its third national championship in May.
“Joining a program that just won the NCAA championship gives me confidence because it shows that the girls there really practice hard and keep their game up,” she said. “It tells me that the coach’s program is really working for the team, and I know when I get there I will be able to improve.”
Lee has finished in the top 5 in all three AJGA invitationals in which she has played this year, including a recent runner-up to Ariya Jutanugarn at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship.
