Jackie Barenborg maintained her pace Saturday at the Price Chopper Tour Championship, shooting a 3-under 67 to break out of a share of the lead entering the second round and take the solo lead into Sunday’s final round. Barenborg is at 7-under 133 for the tournament at Capital Hills in Albany, N.Y.
Barenborg, 25, followed Friday’s bogey-free 66 with 5 birdies and two bogeys to get to her 7-under total. A 2008 graduate of Florida Southern University, Barenborg also finished runner-up at 2010 Futures Tour Qualifying School.
She entered the Futures Tour’s season finale 18th on the money list, and finding a spot in the top 10 on the money list by week’s end would guarantee LPGA membership for 2012. The top 5 players receive a full LPGA card.
Sarah Brown, 19, held a share of the lead with Barenborg after Round 1, but fell off the pace with second-round 72. She is T-10.
Jenny Gleason, a current member of the LPGA tour who also has played the Futures Tour since 2004, made up the most ground Saturday. Gleason birdied six of her first 11 holes, then parred out for a 6-under 64 that left her tied for second with Angela Buzminski. Both players are at 6 under.
Hanna Kang, No. 9 on the money list, and Izzy Beisiegel, who became the first female player to earn a playing card on a men’s professional golf tour (Canadian Tour) in May, also made notable leaderboard jumps in Round 2. They climbed from T-34 to a share of 10th after rounds of 2-under 68.
Sydnee Michaels, who won the Vidalia Championship two weeks ago to vault from No. 13 to No. 5 on the money list, is at 3-under 137 and T-6.
