The Texas men’s golf team will begin its season Friday at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. Jordan Spieth, the United States’ leading player at last week’s Walker Cup, will not be in the lineup, though.
Texas’ school year began Aug. 24, but Spieth, a freshman, has attended only three days of classes because of the U.S. Amateur and Walker Cup. He lost in the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals Aug. 26, then departed Sept. 1 for Scotland with the U.S. Walker Cup team. The United States lost to Great Britain & Ireland, 14-12, at the Walker Cup; Spieth (2-0-1) was the only undefeated American. The team returned to the United States on Monday.
“He just needs to get his feet on the ground,” said Texas head coach John Fields, who added that he and Spieth decided Spieth would miss the season opener.
Three of Spieth’s Walker Cup teammates – Auburn’s Blayne Barber, Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers and Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein – are expected to play Olympia Fields. Rodgers will be making his college debut.
Texas, No. 5 in Golfweek‘s preseason rankings, will have Cody Gribble, Dylan Frittelli, Alex Moon, Kramer Hickok and Julio Vegas in its lineup. Hickok, a freshman, caddied for Spieth at the PGA Tour’s HP Byron Nelson Championship.
