OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Despite not being at full strength, Stanford showed Friday just how potent its lineup can be. The Cardinal, playing without senior David Chung, opened with a 3-under 277 to take a five-shot lead at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
It was an ideal start for Stanford – No. 3 in Golfweek’s preseason rankings – even without Chung, the 2010 U.S. Amateur finalist, who was edged in team qualifying by freshman Patrick Grimes.
Stanford’s most notable addition this season is Patrick Rodgers, a U.S. Walker Cupper and Golfweek’s top-ranked incoming freshman. He shot 2-under 68 Friday. The Cardinal also received contributions from leader Andrew Yun (66) and sophomore Cameron Wilson (69). Last season, Yun was the Cardinal’s most consistent player, with seven top-10 finishes and a victory at The Prestige at PGA West.
Stanford has a five-shot lead over Oklahoma State, which had to throw out the score of Peter Uihlein, the reigning Ben Hogan Award winner, who opened with 74.
Auburn, Alabama and Ohio State are tied for third, eight shots behind Stanford.
