ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Baylor women’s golf team overcame a six-shot deficit in the final round Sept. 26 to win the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
The Bears posted a final-round-best, 3-over 295 to finish at 11-over 887 and win by four shots over TCU (302) and Denver (303). Second-round leader Northwestern (306) finished another shot back in fourth place.
It was Baylor’s first tournament victory since April 2010 (Baylor Spring Invitational), the Bears’ first fall season victory since September 2005 (Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic) and the first title for first-year coach Jay Goble.
Baylor freshman Hayley Davis turned in her second consecutive second-place performance to begin her collegiate career. Davis, who also was runner-up at the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, shot 2-under 217, one stroke behind individual champion Sofia Hoglund of New Mexico.
