MADISON, Miss. – Mississippi’s only event on the PGA Tour will have a new name and new sponsors in 2012.
Tournament director Randy Watkins says the event will now be called the True South Classic. Watkins says “three or four” companies make up the consortium but expects as many as four or five more to join over the next few months. He declined to identify them.
The tournament, which will continue to be played at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, was in jeopardy of being discontinued after Viking Corp. did not renew its title sponsorship.
The 2011 Viking Classic was won by Chris Kirk.
Viking announced it was withdrawing in late August, leaving Watkins a small window to find sponsors to fund an event that began in 1968 as the Magnolia Classic.
