Canada maintains Spirit International lead

Canada maintained its first-round lead Thursday at the Spirit International Amateur, posting a 2-under 142 in the best-ball stroke play tournament that features 80 of the top amateurs from 20 countries, playing in two-man, two-woman teams. Canada is at 14-under 274 for the tournament, and leads the U.S. by three shots.

Scores swelled across the board during Round 2 at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. Canada had cruised to an 11-under 132 in Round 1, but added 10 shots to that total Thursday. Canadian Mackenzie Hughes was the only player on the men’s side to record an eagle, and also had two birdies. Teammate Garrett Rank also had two birdies. They trail Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, with nine, in the individual birdie tally.

Canada is first on the men’s team leaderboard at 12-under 132.

American Kelly Kraft is in a tie for sixth with a total of six birdies, all of which were carded during the first round. Teammate Nathan Smith had three birdies in Round 2 to take his total to six for the tournament.

On the women’s side, Argentina’s Victoria Tanco is at the top of the leaderboard with 10 birdies. She led the charge for her team, which is in first in the women’s team division at 7-under 147 but fifth on the combined leaderboard.

Korea trails the U.S. by a single shot at 10-under 278 after turning in the lowest team score of the day, a 4-under 140. Denmark is fourth at 8-under 280.
