At the heart of Nike’s Method putter line is a unique polymer-grooved face technology that the company says will make the ball start rolling faster and hold its line more effectively.
The heel-toe weighted 001 blade and 003 mid-mallet Method putters start are made of 303 Stainless steel that is milled to create the club’s shape. Then Nike cuts a channel in the sole of each club, just behind the face, followed by a series of grooves in the face.
A soft polymer material is applied into the sole channel and allowed to extrude out of the grooves cut in the face. Nike removes the polymer from the bottom portion of each groove, exposing the steel, but leaves the polymer in the top. According to the company, high-speed video footage shows that the exposed metal in the grooves grabs the ball at impact and starts it rolling faster than smooth-faced putters. At the same time, the polymer softens the feel.
To create the grooves in the sole and the face, Nike removes 30 grams of stainless steel. That weight is put back in the form of a pair of tungsten weights that Nike positioned in the heel and toe of the 001 and 003. The added weight helps to reduce twisting on off-center hits, which should increase stability and help golfers keep the ball on the intended target line.
The Nike Method 001 and 003 are available in 33-, 34-, and 35-inch models for $249. The 001 is available in left- and right-handed, while the 003 is available only in right-handed.
