Rigel Fernandes and Mika Liu, both of Bradenton, Fla. won the AJGA Under Armour®/Vicky Hurst Championship on Sunday at Squire Creek CC in Choudrant, La.
Fernandes fired a 1-under 143 (71-72) to win the boys division by three strokes over Matthew Rushton of Bluffton, S.C., Maxime Blandin of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. and Sam Burns of Shreveport, La. Fernandes was one shot behind Rushton and tied with Blandin going into the final round, but maintained steady play to capture the win.
Ranked No. 51 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings for the class of 2013, Fernandes attributed diligent practice to his success in the tournament.
“I have worked really hard on my putting and short game and it paid off on the greens,” Fernandes said. “I was able to get some shots up-and-down that I don’t think other people really did. I think it paid off at the end of the week.”
Liu, who won the AJGA Junior at Savannah Quarters, captured her second AGJA win of the season with a 3-over 147 (67-80). Her first-round, 5-under 67 set the women’s course record and allowed her to hold on to her lead despite shooting an 80 in the second round. She won the tournament by seven strokes over Lakareber Abe of Angleton, Texas and Harley Dubsky of Valparaiso, Ind.
Liu, ranked No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings for the class of 2017, is using her polarized rounds in this tournament as a learning experience.
“It feels really great to win the second time this year,” Liu said. “This tournament was also a really great experience because I shot one of my best rounds this year and also one of my worst rounds this year. There is a lot to learn still.”
The tournament is one of four with a professional golfer’s name on it, with Hunter Mahan, Gary Woodland and Steve Marino also hosting AJGA events in 2012.
