Woody Woodward has given a verbal commitment to play college golf for Wake Forest beginning in the fall of 2013. Woodward, of Bridgeport, W.Va., also made unofficial visits to Virginia, Auburn, North Carolina, LSU, Mississippi and Penn State.
Woodward said academics, history and the Wake Forest coaching staff were big reasons why he decided to join the Demon Deacons.
“The golf tradition at Wake Forest is second to none,” he said. “The program had everything you look for in a team. The chemistry within the team year in and year out is something I looked for, and Wake Forest does it best.”
Woodward, now No. 29 in Golfweek’s Junior Rankings for the Class of 2013, began the 2011 season with no status after sitting out a year and a half while recovering from shoulder surgery. Playing for Hilton Head Preparatory School, Woodward recently won the SCISA Class 3A Individual High School while leading Hilton Head Prep to the team title. Woodward also won the 2011 West Virginia Junior Match Play and was fifth at the Junior PGA Championship.
