Sponsor exemptions for the ShopRite LPGA Classic have been extended to two top New Jersey-born amateurs. Marina Alex and Meghan Stasi will be among the 144 players in the field June 1-June 3 when the ShopRite is contested at Seaview Golf Club’s Bay Course in Galloway, N.J.
Alex, from Wayne, N.J., will enter the ShopRite after playing in the NCAA Women’s Championship at Vanderbilt’s home course, the Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. Alex has finished in the top 5 at four tournaments this season and was named the SEC Player of the Year for the second time in her career.
“This past year has been awesome, and I believe momentum is on my side,” Alex said. “The timing is right for me to make my pro debut at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.”
Stasi, 34, grew up in Voorhees, N.J., but now lives in Oakland Park, Fla. She played collegiately at Tulane, graduating in 2000, and was the head women’s golf coach at Ole Miss from 2000 to ’07. These days, Stasi is a regular on the Florida Orange Blossom Circuit (she won this year’s Jones/Doherty Championship) and the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. She has three career Mid-Am titles.
Stasi last competed in an LPGA event when she was granted a sponsor exemption to the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship, but missed the cut that week.
“It will be a thrill to play in front of a large gallery at the ShopRite LPGA Classic,” Stasi said. “And it gives two of my most devoted fans the opportunity to see me play: my parents, who are from Haddonfield, N.J.”
