Nova Southeastern captured the NCAA Division II National Championship title on May 19 by defeating Chico State in a 5-0 sweep. It’s the first national championship title for the Sharks.
Nova Southeastern finished second in stroke play at Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louisville, Ky., to easily advance to match play The Sharks defeated South Carolina-Aiken in the quarterfinals before facing its toughest battle in the semis. Nova tied with Central Oklahoma — each school won two matches and halved the fifth — but the Sharks advanced after winning a total-strokes tie breaker. They didn’t lose a single final match to Chico State.
“Winning the first championship in the men’s golf program’s history is special,” said Director of Athletics Michael Mominey. “Garrett Runion has done a tremendous job in just his first year as the head coach. The players are really the ones who have to get the credit, as the men had a tremendous run winning the Sunshine State Conference championship on the way to this national championship. The grind of this particular championship says a lot about the character and the talent of this particular team.”
Nova Southeastern has made eight postseason appearances in the 24-year history of the program, but this is the first national championship title.
