Tyler McDaniel and Janet Mao claimed victories this week at the AJGA Evitt Foundation RTC Junior All Star, held at the WindStone Golf Club in Ringgold, Georgia.
McDaniel, No. 57 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings, went wire-to-wire in the tournament, posting 6-under 204 (67-68-69). This marks the first AJGA win for the Norcross, Georgia resident. He finished birdie-birdie in his final round to hold off Zachary Healy.
“I mishit my tee-shot a bit on No. 18, but it still ended up in the fairway,” he said. “I just felt the adrenaline pumping and took out a 7-iron, and it rolled up to about 8 feet short of the hole. Then I had a clutch putt.” Healy faltered on the way in, making a double-bogey on the final hole to shoot 3-under 67 for a total of 206.
Mao, of nearby Johns Creek, also led her division all three rounds, finishing with a 6-over 216 (71-73-72).
“I began the round with back-to-back bogeys, and I was trying to make up for that all day,” she said. “It was a really tough course, especially the front nine.”
Mao double bogeyed the 18th hole, but still won by two strokes over Taylor Tomlinson. Isabella Skinner shot the low round of the tournament on the final day, signing for a 3-under 67 to tie for third.
