The third round of the AJGA Rolex Girls Junior Championship at The Concession GC in Bradenton, Fla. ended Thursday with 2011 champion Ariya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand in the lead.
Jutanugarn, ranked No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings, carded a third-round 4-under 68, which included seven birdies, to get her to 13 under for the tournament heading into the final round. She was able to extend her second-round 12-shot lead to a 14-shot lead at the end of the third round.
“My front nine was good and my back nine was good too, but I had one double bogey on a par 5 and a bogey on 14,” Jutanugarn said. “When it happened it was crazy, but I just told myself that I have to make more birdies to shoot the low round.”
If Jutanugarn wins by at least 10 strokes, she will set the tournament record for margin of victory. Julieta Granada holds the current record with a 9-stroke win in 2004.
Jutanugarn’s older sister, Moriya, sits in second-place, after posting a 2-under 70 in the third-round, a 3-shot cushion on third-place Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., who sits at 4-over 220.
Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., is 1-shot behind Lee in fourth-place at 5-over 221. Jaye Marie Green of Boca Raton, Fla., rounds out the top-5 at 6-over 222.
