After multiple weather delays and the eventual cancellation of the second round altogether, Ryan Orr and Claudia De Antonio finished at the top of the AJGA Florida Junior, held at the Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Florida.
Orr, a rising senior from Belleair, Fla., shot 3-over 75 in the first round and found himself well out of the running for the title.
“I didn’t expect to win at all,” Orr said. “After shooting a 75 in round one, I thought I’d go out and just have fun. Then after shooting even on the front nine today I told myself to go shoot under and luckily it was good enough.”
Two birdies and an eagle on the back nine highlighted Orr’s brilliant second round. His 68 boosted him from a tie for 15th to solo first by one stroke at 1-under 143.
James Leadbetter, a verbal commit to Arkansas, fired consecutive rounds of even-par 72 to finish in second. Seiya Liu of Beverly Hills, Calif., dropped from first to a tie for third after following up his first round 67 with a second round 78.
In the Girls Division, Claudia De Antonio, a rising junior from Weston, Fla., lapped the field with a 4 over 148 (74-74). Local knowledge helped her to the title, as she plays out of host course Weston Hills.
“Today was great because I was really consistent and accurate in my shots,” De Antonio explained. “However, my low point was definitely my putting.”
Putting aside, De Antonio cleared her nearest competitor by four shots. Maria Alejandra Merchan, also of Weston, finished at 8 over 152 to take second. Three players shot 9 over 153 to tie for third.
