2011-12 Golfweek/Sagarin rank: 17
Go-to guy: T.J. Vogel
Season outlook: It’s possible that one of the best one-two punches in college golf reside in Gainesville, Fla. Seniors T.J. Vogel and Tyler McCumber, Florida’s top two leaders in stroke average, respectively, in 2011-12, return to lead the Gators, who finished third at the SEC Championship and T-12 at the NCAA Championship last season.
Vogel, a second-team All-American last season, cruised to a dominant victory at the U.S. Amateur Public Links this summer. McCumber was T-2 at the NCAA Championship and earned honorable-mention All-America honors as a junior.
Behind Vogel and McCumber, sophomore J.D. Tomlinson is poised to break out. Tomlinson had a strong summer highlighted with a win at the U.S. Open local qualifier in Lecanto, Fla. He also was third at the Florida Amateur and 10th at the Palmetto Amateur.
Fellow sophomore, Eric Banks, was also destined for a breakout year, but he had heart surgery on June 25 and will miss most if not all of the fall season.
“He’ll definitely play in the spring if he doesn’t return for the last one or two tournaments of the fall,” head coach Buddy Alexander said. “He’s chipping and putting right now, but he’s definitely going to miss some time.”
Freshmen A.J. Crouch and Conor Richardson are both former honorable-mention Rolex Junior All-Americans and should get some opportunities this fall, especially with Banks out.
