2011-12 Golfweek/Sagarin rank: 3
Go-to guy: Pedro Figueiredo
Season outlook: The Bruins will have a tall task, having to replace 2012 Hogan Award winner Patrick Cantlay. The Bruins have plenty of depth. All-Americans Pedro Figueiredo and Anton Arboleda will anchor the lineup. The Bruins also can expect some help from two incoming freshmen, Jonathan Garrick and Lorens Chan. Garrick was a first-team All-American, while Chan made the Sweet 16 at this year’s Western Amateur. They are two of five freshmen on the roster. The Bruins also will add Manav Shah, a redshirt sophomore, who had to sit out last season after transferring from San Diego. Shah was runner-up to Justin Thomas at this year’s Jones Cup, and finished second to Cantlay at the 2011 NCAA West Regional and Southern California Amateur.
One question is whether Pontus Widegren can shake off a so-so junior season and return to the form he had as a sophomore. Widegren, the 2010 Ping/Golfweek Preview champion, ranked 97th in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings last season, a year after finishing 29th.
