Patrick Cantlay shot 8-under 63 Monday at BanBury Golf Course in Eagle, Idaho, to qualify for the Web.com Tour’s Albertsons Boise Open. Alex Coe (66), Scott Smith (67) and Boise State alum Tyler Aldridge (67) also earned spots for this week’s event at Hillcrest Country Club in Boise.
The Boise Open, which has been conducted since the Web.com Tour’s inaugural season of 1990, offers a $725,000 purse, the fourth-largest of the season.
Cantlay was the world’s No. 1 amateur when he turned pro after this year’s U.S. Open. He has made the cut in five of six PGA Tour events as a pro but hasn’t finished better than 31st and has earned $92,683. Cantlay has one more sponsor exemption remaining: at the Frys.com Open on Oct. 11-14 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif. PGA Tour nonmembers are limited to seven sponsor exemptions per season.
This is the second time Cantlay has Monday qualified this year. He also qualified for last month’s Reno-Tahoe Open on the PGA Tour and finished 37th. He finished 31st in his last PGA Tour start, at the Wyndham Championship.
Cantlay is exempt into the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School by virtue of making the cut in a major this year. He was low amateur at the Masters (T-47) and also made the cut at the U.S. Open (T-41).
