SANDESTIN, Fla. – Methodist University has taken the early lead in the men’s division at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational at The Raven Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. As a team, they collectively shot 5-over 289.
The Monarchs were lead by senior Andrew Bateman who shot a 1-under 70 on the par-71, 6,793-yard course. Bateman sits in a tie for second place in the race for medalist.
Also helping the Monarchs to the early lead was Ben Boyle, at even par. Junior Jeff Wells shot a 2-over 73, and senior Mike Wesko shot a 4-over 75.
One stroke back in second place is LaGrange College. Freshman Cory Howard, whose four birdies on his front-nine, boosted him to the top of the leaderboard after many players faltered late in the afternoon.
As a team, Texas at Tyler looked to be the early clubhouse leader before some trouble brewed up on the back-nine. Junior Trent Boudoin was 2 under after the 12th hole, and then proceeded to make bogey, double-bogey and bogey.
“I had a good round going up until then,” said Boudoin. “We just have to go out tomorrow and play our own games, and stray away from a few of the mistakes we made today.”
Texas at Tyler sits in a tie for third with St. John’s (Minn.) after team totals of 8-over 292. Skidmore College, Illinois Wesleyan and Oglethorpe are T-5 at 9-over 293 after the first round.
Another good round was not meant to be for Emory’s Johnathan Chen. Chen was 3 under through 12 before he quadruple-bogeyed the 13th.
The 13th hole was the second toughest on the course today.
On the individual leade board, there is a four way tie for second at 1-under 70, which includes Bateman, Drew Lynch of St. John’s(MN), Eric Muslawski of Rhodes College and Eric Quinn of Oglethorpe. There are five tied for seventh at even par.
The second round beings at 8 a.m. CDT on Monday.
