Jay Seawell’s Alabama team delivered a sizeable gift on Tuesday for his birthday: a victory at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The title is Alabama’s first this fall.
Alabama, Golfweek’s preseason No. 1 and No. 10 in the current rankings, shot a final-round 2-over 282 to outpace the rest of the field at Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala., and win the tournament. The Crimson Tide finished with a 54-hole total of 17-over 857. That put them four shots ahead of runner-up Florida, who lost the top spot on the leaderboard during the final round with a 13-over 293. Auburn was third while UNLV was fourth.
Alabama’s Justin Thomas led the team, earning individual honors for the third time in his last six starts. Thomas, who is ranked No. 42 by Golfweek, finished at 2-under 208. He shot 8-under 64 in the second round.
Auburn’s Michael Johnson was second on the individual leader, one shot behind Thomas, and Clemson’s Miller Capps finished third.
