Before The McGladrey Classic, Tommy Gainey spent an off-week experimenting with Callaway Razr Fit drivers and weighting schemes.
He settled on a Razr Fit driver with an additional 1 degree of loft (up to 10.5), along with 10 grams of weight added in the crown toward the heel. This raised the center of gravity and gave Gainey more spin (up about 250 rpm). In testing he was getting about 12 extra yards of carry distance. At Sea Island, he averaged 284 yards (35th).
Gainey used Aldila graphite shafts in his three longest clubs: RIP’d NV 65 S in his driver, NV 65 S in his 3-wood and RIP Phenom 80 S in his hybrid.
For all golfers who want to attempt to putt like Gainey (24 putts in a final-round 60), here are his putter specs: Odyssey Backstryke Blade with XG insert, 34 inches finished length, 4-degree loft, 69.25-degree lie, 540 grams, swingweight E3.5 and a Odyssey Tempest grip.
More modern golfers are paying attention to putter swingweight, Gainey being an example.
Gainey’s bag (all Callaway except his hybrid): Razr Fit driver (10.5 degree), FT-I Tour 3-wood (15 degree), Adams Idea Pro a12 Proto G hybrid (20 degree), Razr X forged Irons (4-PW), Callaway Forged wedges (50, 54 and 60 degree) and an Odyssey Backstryke Blade putter. He played the Callaway Hex Black Tour golf ball.

27 play new Titleist golf balls: The McGladrey Classic was the third week of Titleist’s “seeding and validation process” for the latest Pro V1 and Pro V1x prototype balls. A total of 27 players used the new balls at Sea Island.
Of those 27, 24 played the Pro V1x and three used the Pro V1. Looking at the entire 2012 PGA Tour, about two-thirds of Titleist ball usage has been the Pro V1x and about one-third the Pro V1. Titleist has not revealed specifications for the new balls.
