Match play comes but once a year on the AJGA, and after two rounds of stroke-play qualifying at the Polo Golf Junior Classic, the brackets are set. The field was narrowed down to the top 32 boys and top 32 girls on Tuesday at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Scott Scheffler shot a final-round 3-under 68 on Tuesday on PGA National’s Champion course to climb to the top spot on the boys leaderboard. Scheffler finished one shot ahead of Robby Shelton, who won the Junior PGA Championship earlier this year, and Benjamin Griffin.
At the bottom of the bracket, Parker Derby of Columbus, Ga., found the final spot in match play by winning a six-for-one playoff. Derby finished regulation at 8-over 151 after a final-round 72. He’ll draw Scheffler in the opening round on Wednesday.
In the girls division, two-time Rolex Player of the Year Ariya Jutanugarn shot a second-round 69 to catch first-round co-leader Esther Lee and tie for medalist honors. Lee received the top seed. Alison Lee and Abbey Carlson tied for third. Defending champion Nicole Morales also safely made the bracket, finishing T-5 with Michaela Owen.
Notable players to miss the cut include Junior Ryder Cupper Samantha Wagner, Annika Invitational runner-up Shannon Aubert, 2011 Thunderbird International winner Karen Chung, Jerry Cole Sportsmanship Award winner Thomas Walsh, three-time AJGA winner Doug Ghim and 2011 Western Junior winner Connor Black.
