According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Phil Mickelson has informed the San Diego Padres ownership group that he will not be an owner of the Major League Baseball franchise after all.
Mickelson returned to his hometown to speak about his plans to renovate the Torrey Pines North Course, but he also offered insight on his change in heart.
“I think to be involved with the Padres you have to be fully committed to the long term,” Mickelson told the Union-Tribune. “I’ve been born and raised here, but at this moment I’m not able to make that kind of long-term commitment to the city and to the team.”
The decision was made at some point in November, Mickelson said.
The Padres ownership group included the O’Malley family, former longtime owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego businessman Ron Fowler.
