Hyundai TOC: Kuchar, 5 others favored by Vegas

With only 30 players launching the 2013 PGA Tour season at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Maui, the chances of getting it right seems better than a normal tournament week.

It appears Las Vegas is hedging its bets partly because of the size and quality of the field making six players, Matt Kuchar, Jason Dufner, Steve Stricker, Ian Poulter, Dustin Johnson and Webb Simpson co-favorites at 12-1.

Vegas may want to rethink Poulter and Stricker.

Poulter tweeted on the last day of 2012 that his followers shouldn’t expect much from him in Hawaii.

Stricker made it public in December he was going to play a limited schedule in 2013. The Wisconsin native plans on vacationing with his family after Maui versus playing at Sony and his plans are not to return to the PGA Tour until Match Play at the end of February. Not sure how committed he will be even though he is defending.

It’s possible the better bets are at 15-1 with Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson, Brandt Snedeker and Nick Watney.

Length is always welcomed at the Plantation Course and both Watson and Bradley fit that bill. It just depends how motivated Watson is so early in the season.

Snedeker is one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, which will come in handy with the large and grainy greens on the Plantation Course.

Of all the players at 15/1, Watney was the hottest at the end of 2012. The only issue may be Watney’s change of equipment in 2013. How well will he adjust to the change? He has said that he hoped it was his talent and the not the equipment for his success when discussing the change in equipment while in China, but when under the gun Watney may not be as sharp with unfamiliar equipment.
