Houston, No. 26 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 3-over 291 Tuesday at Texarkana (Ark.) Country Club to win its first Conference USA title since 2001.
The Cougars finished at 7-under 857 (286-280-291), three shots better than No. 20 SMU. The two teams were tied after 36 holes, but SMU shot 294 in the final round. UCF, No. 53 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished third at 1 under after shooting a final-round 287.
Houston’s Roman Robledo, No. 120 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, made birdie on Nos. 16 and 18 to win the individual title by two shots. He finished at 8-under 208 (72-65-71), two shots better SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau, who led Robledo by one shot after 36 holes. Robledo shot a bogey-free 65 in the second round. It was the low round of the tournament by three shots.
DeChambeau shot a final-round 74 after opening with consecutive 68s. He returned to 8 under par in the final round with a birdie at the par-5 12th, but bogeyed the next two holes before parring in.
Dechambeau, No. 42 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, bogeyed the first hole, but responded with an eagle at the par-5 second. He made birdie on No. 4 to reach 10 under par, but made five bogeys and one birdie the rest of the way.
