The field is set for the semifinal matches of the 111th Connecticut Amateur.
Lawrence Haertel defeated Jeffrey Evanier, 3 and 2; Peter Ballo topped Jason Hogan, 1 up; Paul Schaeffer beat Benjamin Day, 5 and 3; and Cody Paladino knocked off John Flaherty, 2 and 1, Thursday at New Haven Country Club in Hamden, Conn.
Haertel will face Ballo while Schaeffer will play Paladino on Friday.
The upset of the day came when the 27-year-old Haertel, the No. 16 seed and holder of the 2005 Russell C. Palmer Cup, knocked off top seed Kevin Josephson, 1 up, in their morning Round-of-16 match.
With the victory, Haertel advanced to the afternoon where he faced eighth-seeded Evanier. Similar to his morning round, Haertel fell behind early. But with a birdie on the difficult par-3 12th hole he took a 1-up lead, which he never relinquished.
All four of the semifinalists are looking to capture their first Connecticut Amateur, however, there is no lack of experience in the group. Most notably, Paladino, who advanced to the 2007 U.S. Amateur Public Links final, where only 36 holes stood between him and a trip to Augusta National.
“No question that experience in the Publinks final is something I always carry with me, especially in match play events. Being on that big stage, there’s nothing quite like it,” Paladino said. “It’s fun to remember and think back, but I’m just trying to stay focused on this week and my next match.”
The 111th Connecticut Amateur concludes on Saturday with a 36-hole final which can be followed live online (FOR LIVE SCORING, CLICK HERE). There will be a shot-by-shot broadcast of the finals, tracking both players live on a map, and will include yardage and club selection.
