Dufner ties all-time major record with 63

Jason Dufner, with a second-round 63 that propelled him to the PGA Championship lead, tied the record Friday for low score posted in a major.

Dufner’s bogey-free day got kick-started early, with an eagle at No. 2 followed by back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4-5.

After carding five straight pars, Dufner got another favorable flurry – birdieing three times in six holes at Nos. 11, 13 and 16. A good look at birdie on No. 18 stopped about a foot short of the hole.

“Obviously I showed a little bit of nerves there, leaving it short,” Dufner said. “. . . I’m just happy to be in the position I’m in going into the weekend.”

Having yet to win a major, Dufner finished T-4 at the last two U.S. Opens.

Dufner is the 26th golfer to card the score in any of golf’s four majors.
