Ben Crane’s playoff bubble has burst in an unfortunate fashion, a back injury prompting him to withdraw from The Barclays despite being as low as 5 under par in the early going.
Lucas Glover also withdrew Friday with a reported wrist injury, the second week in a row his tournament ended early.
Crane’s lower-back pain overshadowed an opening 67 that saw him 5 under through 13 holes. He bogeyed No. 16 to drop to 4 under, then started his second round started with two bogeys in four holes before ending his tournament.
Crane dubbed himself the “bubble boy” and shot a rap video this week to make light of being the last man into the FedEx Cup playoffs at 125th in points. He said from his Twitter account, @bencranegolf: “Quickest video ever. @matkearney made up the song Monday. Tom T w @PGATOUREnt shot in 30 min yesterday. @Tyandre & @mattispositive edited”
Glover, who won the U.S. Open in 2009 at Bethpage (N.Y.) State Park’s Black course on nearby Long Island, also withdrew from the Wyndham Championship last week after breaking his toe. Glover was even par with a first-round 71 and had three pars to start the second round when he headed in. Glover was 107th in points.
