2012-13 Golfweek rank: 9
Go-to girl: Junior Kendall Martindale
Season outlook: The Commodores played in 11 tournaments last season and posted nine top 5s – including three runner-up finishes – but once again no victories, a drought head coach Greg Allen would like to see his team end this season. Vanderbilt hasn’t won a tournament title since October 2006.
Junior Kendall Martindale, a first-team All-SEC selection led the team with nine top 15s and a 73.71 scoring average in 11 starts last season, and will joined at the top of the lineup by sophomore Jenny Hahn, who closed strong in compiling a 74.71 stroke average and five top 20s, including three consecutive to end the season (SEC Championship, NCAA West Regional, NCAA Championship).
Rene Sobolewski provides senior leadership and played in all 11 events last season but posted only one top 10, as did junior Irina Gabasa. Allen has brought in four freshman: Simin Feng, Lauren Johnson, Katie Sborov and Antonia Scherer. Feng, No. 4 in Golfweek’s Junior Rankings, could make the quickest impact for the Commodores. She advanced to match play at this summer’s U.S. Women’s Amateur.
If Martindale and Hahn eah can take more steps forward in their progress and get a little more help from the final three spots, the Commodores could end that winless stretch this season.
