Keegan Bradley’s course-record 63 didn’t last long at Liberty National – Kevin Chappell one-upped him (or one-downed?) Saturday with a 62 during the third round of The Barclays.
Chappell started the day with a birdie at No. 10, picking up two more at Nos. 16-17 before making the turn and another at No. 1.
Staying bogey-free all day, Chappell shot 30 on the back nine – keyed by four straight birdies at Nos. 3-6. A birdie at No. 8 put him in position to pursue at 61; his approach at No. 9 stopped about 18 feet from the hole, but his birdie putt stopped a couple of feet short.
“My game hadn’t shown much lately, but I’ve been working hard,” Chappell told the PGA Tour. “I got some good breaks . . . I played from the wrong fairway twice, but took advantage of the breaks and holed the important putts.”
Chappell, a UCLA product who stands 58th in points, rose to 11 under with the round and headed to the clubhouse one back of leader Gary Woodland. The 27-year-old finished second at The Memorial in June.
