Putnam’s 63 gives him share of lead in Indiana

While Phil Mickelson flirted with 59 Friday on the PGA Tour, Michael Putnam was challenging that number at the Tour Finals opener in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Putnam shot 7-under 29 on the back nine after starting the day on tee No. 10 at Sycamore Hills Golf Club, but added just two more birdies on the front nine to shoot 9-under 63. He shares the lead at the Hotel Fitness Championship with Trevor Immelman and Patrick Cantlay at 11 under.

Putnam finished first on the regular-season money list to lock up his 2013-14 PGA Tour card. Immelman is trying to retain his after finishing out of the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings. Cantlay qualified for the Tour Finals based on his finish on the money list, but he will need to finish in the top 25 through the four playoff events in order to gain PGA Tour status for next season.

A shot back of the leaders are Arron Oberholser, Scott Harrington and Bud Cauley. Cauley is trying to keep his PGA Tour card after a disappointing sophomore campaign on the PGA Tour this season.
