Trevor Immelman birdied the 72nd hole to secure a one-shot victory over 54-hole leader Patrick Cantlay at the Hotel Fitness Championship on Sunday, securing a 2014 PGA Tour card for winning the Web.com Tour Finals opener.
Immelman fired a 66 to overcome Cantlay’s three-shot lead heading into the final round. Cantlay fired an even-par 72 to miss out on his second win of the season.
Immelman, who finished at 20 under for the tournament, won for the first time since the 2008 Masters.
“There’s no doubt this is huge for me,” Immelman said. “It’s been a long, frustrating road for me. It was so disappointing to lose my card. I’m not going to lie, I’ve struggled since 2008. I’ve been wondering if I’d be able to get back to playing the way I know I can play.”
Immelman had only one top-10 finish on the PGA Tour this season, winning just $360,549 in 24 events. He missed the cut in half of those starts. He has more than $12 million in career earnings with two career victories.
The Web.Com Tour Finals consist of Nos. 26-75 on the Web.com Tour money list, as well as Nos. 126-200 on the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings. They are all playing for 25 PGA Tour cards.
The Hotel Fitness Championship is the first of four Finals events.
“I think my wife and family truly understands how frustrating things were for me,” Immelman said. “This is really sweet and I’m going to enjoy it.”
