Alabama’s first tournament of the fall season ended a lot like its final event of last spring: With the Crimson Tide showing they are at the top of the nation in men’s golf.
Alabama freshman Robby Shelton, replacing departed first-team All-American Justin Thomas in the lineup, tied for medalist honors Sunday at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Inviational in Olympia Fields, Ill., leading the defending NCAA champions to a 9-over 849 total and an 18-shot victory. Texas finished second at 27-over 867, followed by Oklahoma State (869), Arkansas (871) and Stanford (872).
The Crimson Tide, Golfweek’s preseason No. 2 team, didn’t miss a beat with Shelton in the lineup. He shot rounds of 71-66-73 and finished at even-par 210 in his first college event, sharing first place with Stanford’s Cameron Wilson, who shot a final-round 70. SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau (67) finished third, one shot back. Shelton was joined by three Alabama teammates in the top 12: Trey Mullinax (T-4), Bobby Wyatt (T-6) and Cory Whitsett (T-12).
