Douglas Hanzel of Savannah, Ga., will square off against Pat O’Donnell of Happy Valley, Ore., in this afternoon’s final of the USGA Senior Amateur Championship at Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cashiers, N.C.
Hanzel took early control of his morning match against Chip Lutz of Reading, Pa., and defeated this week’s stroke-play medalist, 3 and 2. Hanzel made back-to-back birdies on the par-3 third and par-5 fourth holes for a 2-up lead. He then made consecutive birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, both par-4 holes, for a 4-up lead at the turn. Lutz got the margin back to 2 holes after Hanzel bogeyed the par-4 12th, but would get no closer.
Lutz, who won the British Senior Amateur and Canadian Senior Amateur titles in both 2011 and ’12, had been seeking his first USGA Senior Amateur title.
O’Donnell defeated Buzz Fly of Memphis, Tenn., 2 and 1, this morning in a match that was tight the whole way through. O’Donnell won the par-5 first hole with a birdie and never trailed, although he never led by more than one hole until closing out the match with a birdie on the par-3 17th.
