Two weeks after withdrawing from the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open due to an illness, Hideki Matsuyama withdrew from the HSBC Champions on Friday morning citing a back injury.
The 21-year-old Matsuyama, who is ranked No. 28 in the world, carded a 1-under 71 in the first round Thursday at Shesan International in Shanghai, China. It was just his second WGC start.
Matsuyama has won three times this year on the Japan Tour and posted top 10s at both the Open Championship and U.S. Open this year.
