Mai Dechathipat has given a verbal commitment to play golf at Auburn beginning in 2015. Dechathipat also considered Duke and Florida, among other schools.
Dechathipat, 16, is a native of Thailand who has been a student at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., since age 13. She qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links at 15 and twice finished in the top 3 in AJGA events this year. She tied for eighth at the Annika Invitational.
“I chose Auburn because I believe and trust that both coach (Andrew) Pratt and coach (Kim) Evans can improve me as a person and in my golf game to help me reach my dreams,” Dechathipat said. “Auburn had the best facility, with more than three courses that I can play any time and a perfect back range for me to work on pitching and short game peacefully. I also believe that their program, including physically, mentally and academically, can take me to where I want to go because I would have all the help in the world.”
Dechathipat said her goal is to become an All-American at Auburn before playing the LPGA tour and becoming a top-3 player in the world.
