Kevin Streelman was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open Friday with an eye injury.
Streelman was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney where he was diagnosed with a scratch on the top of the cornea in his left eye.
“I woke up this morning and something wasn’t right in my eye,” Streelman told the AFP. “The doctor advised me it was pretty badly infected and while I’ve been trying using eye drops I just started getting dizzy so I just couldn’t go on.”
Streelman, one of the few Americans competing this week at a tournament that once drew the U.S.’s best, fired a 2-under 70 in Thursday’s first round. He is scheduled to play in next week’s Nedbank Challenge in South Africa.
