WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. – The biggest challenge during the final round of the Golfweek Senior National Championship was staying warm. As temperatures hovered in the 40s and the wind swirled on Jan. 18, the final round at Saddlebrook Resort became a story of enduring the elements.
In the Senior division, Stephen Sharpe, of Greensboro, N.C., moved out of a tie with Hal Wright to win the outright title. Sharpe bookended a 1-under 69 with rounds of 6-over 76. After turning in 1-over 36 in the final round, Sharpe struggled to keep his game together on the way into the clubhouse. He triple-bogeyed the par-4 11th, then made bogey at Nos. 15 and 17.
Still, his 11-over 221 was enough to hold off runner-up Mark Macejko, who finished one shot back. Sharpe fell in the first round of match play at the U.S. Senior Amateur in 2013.
In the Super Senior division, Jim Rollefson’s 6-over 216 earned him a four-shot win over Jon Abbett. Rollefson’s total was the low of the tournament, and included rounds of 72-70-74. Rollefson, of Naples, Fla., also won the January swing for super seniors, a points race based on four senior amateur events during the month of January.
Rollefson’s list of U.S. Golf Association Championships is long, and includes the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. He also played in last year’s U.S. Senior Amateur.
In the Legends division, Ray Darmstadt of Cocoa Beach, Fla., shot 22-over 232 (78-75-79) to beat Walt Martin by two shots.
